After watching an episode of one of my favourite sitcoms Modern Family, which was themed on the just celebrated Mother's Day, I was left with the question, so can a gay dad be celebrated on this day?
This came along when Cam, Mitch's partner (the gay couple in the sitcom) gets offended after being treated to a breakfast in bed and celebrated on Mother's Day. Cam is pretty much flamboyant and oozes a femme presence by default. Mitch is pretty much camp too but in their relationship and parenting unit, I can clearly tell Cam is the maternal one and Mitch plays papa.
So yes in a gay parent unit like Cam and Mitch's, there are two men in the equation and truth of any same sex couple, there will only be one gender (DUH same sex couple). Some will acknowledge the fact of existing roles on who is the "alpha male" and who is "wonder woman" in the relationship. So in this scenario, shouldn't wonder woman be then celebrated on Mother's Day.
Yeah Cam ain't a mother biologically, but in all practicality he covers the bases of a mother and I'm sure plays a better maternal role than some mothers I have come across in this world. So why not be celebrated on this day then? Hmm... Where Cam's denial to be celebrated, I don't know and will not speculate (I would really love to though), but Mr., you need to yet jump out of another closet. YEBO YEAH you ain't a woman, but to Lilly (their adopted Vietnamese child) you are as good as her mommy, so please don't burst those balloons.
Just wanting to put a point across on the many things we deny ourselves in our same sex coupling. Some things are so obvious but because of words and labels we tend to deny ourselves goods we deserve.
To all those gay guys out there holding it down on the motherly front, I hope you had an AYOBA mother's day and that you keep on keeping on!!!
xx
